How to Become a Certified IT Technician

Requirements

There are very few requirements necessary to start your career in IT. Most people interested in this field will have those requirements already:

  1. End User skills with Windows-based personal computers
  2. Basic knowledge of computing concepts, including hardware and software
  3. Basic knowledge of how operating systems, file systems, and networks function

Training Program

  1. CompTIA A+ course, which provides the knowledge, application, and hands-on experience with different types of computers and peripheral devices to successfully pass the two CompTIA A+ certification exams
  2. CompTIA Network+, which provides the knowledge, application, and hands-on experience with multiple computers organized in various network types to successfully pass the CompTIA Network+ certification exam.

Studying

  1. Using study preparation materials in conjunction with course materials, preparing for and taking practice exams will provide the context for success on the certification exams. When you can complete practice exams consistently with a score of 90% or higher, you are ready to tackle the certification exam.

Exams

  1. The CompTIA A+ certification consists of two exams.
  2. The CompTIA Network+ certification consists of one exam.
  3. If you do not take your training through a training center that provides exam vouchers, you will need to purchase exam vouchers. The two A+ exams cost $199/ea and the Network+ exam costs $285.

Taking Your Exams

  1. Exams are administered at various PearsonVUE certified testing centers. You register for your exams on the PearsonVUE website, selecting the testing center most convenient for you. You can choose the best testing date based on your study and preparation timeline.
  2. All exams include both multiple choice and performance-based questions.
  3. For the A+ exams, both exams consist of 90 questions with 90 minutes to complete the exam. For the first exam, a passing score is 72% (68 questions answered correctly). For the second exam, a passing score is 75% (70 questions answered correctly).
  4. The Network+ exam consists of 90 questions over a 90-minute testing period. A passing score is 80% (72 questions answered correctly).
